I am a freelance journalist with an ardour for producing engaging and accurate copy. I am self-motivated and organised with a sharp eye for accuracy, and am a very confident and effective communicator.

From a young age I have been passionate about writing. My mum dedicated hours encouraging me to read and write as a youngster and since then, Iโ€™ve always had an enthusiasm for words. After two weeks work experience at my local newspaper at the age of 15, I knew that a writing career was for me.

After completing my A-levels, I concentrated on my equestrian pursuits and gainedย my British Horse Society (BHS) stages 1 and 2. I then studied BSc Equine Science (Hons) at Hartpury University, Gloucester โ€“ a centre of excellence in equestrianism. During my degree, I was employed part-time by Hartpury Universityโ€™s marketing and communications department as a student ambassador where I learnt to write copy for the web, produce press releases and write news stories. Throughout my degree, I also produced copyย for The British Grooms Association magazine which gave me a great grounding in interviewing and writing articles.

In my second and third year as a student, I undertook work placements at monthly title Horse magazine and weekly publication Horse & Hound where I gained invaluable in-house experience.

After graduating, I tookย a job at Horse magazine as Products Editor where I learnt the ins and outs of working on a magazine. While working for Horse magazine, I often reported at events across the country for Horseโ€™s then sister title, Horse & Hound. This helped to polish my interviewing skills and report writing, and I still report for Horse & Hound across a variety of disciplines including dressage and point-to-point.

After 18 happy months at Horse magazine, I took up a new challenge as Assistant Editor at Horse & Rider magazine where I was involved in editing, proof reading and laying out pages as well as writing features, articles and news stories. I learnt a lot about the design process and how to work copy into layouts as well as editing copy.

In 2011, I decided to take up a freelance writing career. Iย now write event reports and articles for Horse & Hound, edit the Horse Care section in Your Horse, create content for HorseFest’s website as content director, write general features for British Dressage and British Equestrian, produce masterclasses, interviews and articles for British Horse magazine, write commercial pieces and compile the tried and tested section for Country Smallholding, and edit Petplan Equine’s online newsletters.

Outside of working hours, I enjoy spending my time with my sonย William, my husband Mike and our Border Collie Tess, and riding my coloured Appaloosa x Gypsy cob mare Matilda.

I’ve written two books, The Appaloosa โ€“ Allen Guide to Horse and Pony Breeds which was published by JA Allen in 2009, and co-authored ‘Riding – A Beginner’s Guide’ alongside Stef Eardley which wasย published in the summer of 2014.
